To increase concentration, one must practice the skills of concentration. To increase performance at school or work, one must practice the associated cognitive skills. Through repetition and consistency, one gains proficiency and permanency. This is the basis of Edufeedback.

Academic and professional success relies heavily on good focus/attention, visual tracking, time on-task, short-term memory sequencing, and discriminatory processing (more skills info). Without these skills, everything from reading comprehension to remembering simple instructions is very difficult. Why Edufeedback Uses a Video Format

Children and adults with attention related problems can easily play off-the-shelf video games, or watch a 3-ring circus without moving a muscle. That's because these video games and high-energy activities are extremely over stimulating. Unfortunately, while these activities may be fun, they teach nothing about attention, and may actually promote diffused attention over focused attention.

Focused attention is essential for learning and concentrating. Classrooms, work environments and home settings cannot produce such a highly stimulating environment, and therefore cannot compete. Listening, reading and writing are not stimulating enough for many to sit still through.

The Teacher

The teaching method is the series of actions that includes content and organization of teaching materials. It encompasses both how and what is learned, the teacher's and learner's attributes, and the learning environment. Examples may include use of preparatory sets, computerized instruction, repeating instructions, or providing an example, etc.

The Learner

The learner's attributes include the learner's entire schema: all existing knowledge, metacognitive skills, disabilities, and memory capabilities.

The Learning Process

The learning process demands that the student pay as much attention to the teaching method as possible in order to assimilate the data provided. If this occurs, then cognitive processing of the data can occur which leads to integration and organization with prior information in the learner's schema. A person with an attention challenge is usually deficient in several skills necessary to learn - attention is only part of the problem. Poor attention impedes the transfer of information from short term memory to long term memory. Forgetfulness is the outcome.

Cognitive Outcomes

Cognitive outcomes are actual changes in the learner's knowledge or memory system including acquisition of information, procedures, and strategies. This includes understanding of information. Compare this to memorizing multiplication tables. This can be very difficult when a student cannot pay enough attention to class work.

Outcome Performance

Outcome performance is the learner's performance or actual behavioral changes including retention and transfer behaviors related to new tasks. Compare this to using your multiplication tables at the grocery store. This can be very difficult if your attention is wandering.

Learning Is Difficult For AD/HD Students

    Time on task is the ability to start and complete an assignment within a given amount of time. Homework is a good example.

  • Visual Tracking

    Visual Tracking is the ability to follow a moving object with focused attention. Watching your boss while at a staff meeting is a good example.

  • Short Term Memory

    Short term memory helps us perform tasks, take multiple step directions, and remember names for a short period of time.

  • Discriminatory Processing

    Discriminatory processing means that a student can filter out distractions while paying attention to the teacher. Increasing this ability, reduces the effects of distraction at home, school, and the workplace.
